Winter (January - March)
- Winter watering of trees, shrubs, and sod. Use one of
the following rules: if daytime temperatures go over 50 degrees
for 3 consecutive days OR if 4 weeks without snow, the temperature
is above freezing, and the ground is not frozen, then you will need
to winter water. DO NOT fire up your irrigation system. Instead
use hose and sprinklers early in the day so the water has time to
soak in before the temperatures drop overnight. Remember to drain
your hose(s) after each use to prevent freeze damage.
- Prune trees and shrubs (March or after flowering) for shaping
and to stimulate growth.
- Cut back ornamental grasses (March) to 6"-8"
height.
- Have soil tested to determine pH. This will determine the
fertilizer needs for your soil type.
- Please remember to feed and water the birds!
