Fall (October - December)
- Deep root water all trees and shrubs (November or as needed, see winter watering).
- Mulch around roses and tender plants.
- Plant bulbs for spring blooms.
- Clean up planting beds by removing spent annuals, leaves and debris.
- Add soil amendments where needed. Till in to incorporate air then let the soil settle until spring.
- Wrap trunks of tender deciduous shade trees (November). Prune dead or diseased branches, remove long stragglers or leaders to prevent wind or snow breakage. Limit fall pruning since it stimulates growth.
- Final application of lawn fertilizer (October).
- Shut down and drain your irrigation system (see irrigation system instructions) or drain and store hose and sprinklers when the night temperatures go below freezing (~ late October).
- Plant trees and shrubs - see individual plant for specific times and space needs.
